Celebrating Independence

Celebrating Independence

As we celebrate Independence Day this July, we’re reminded that independence looks different for everyone. While dementia may change how a person navigates daily life, it does not diminish their desire for purpose, choice, dignity, and connection.

At Kemper House, we believe independence is not about doing everything alone—it is about having opportunities to participate, make choices, and feel valued. Small moments throughout the day can have a big impact: choosing an outfit, helping fold laundry, setting the table, watering flowers, enjoying a favorite snack, singing along to a familiar song, or sharing stories from years gone by.

These simple opportunities help preserve confidence and create meaningful moments of success. Even when certain tasks become more challenging, focusing on what a person can do allows us to honor their abilities and support their sense of identity.

Families can help encourage independence during visits by offering choices and inviting participation. Instead of asking, “Do you want to do anything today?” try offering simple options like, “Would you like to sit outside or relax in your room?” or “Would you like water or coffee?” Small decisions help your loved one remain involved and connected.

This Independence Day, we celebrate not only our nation’s freedom, but also the unique strengths, stories, and spirit of every resident who calls Kemper House home. Thank you for partnering with us in creating an environment where each person is respected, supported, and encouraged to shine.
