The Luck of Connection
March 3, 2026
March is the season of shamrocks, rainbows, and a little talk about luck. Around St. Patrick’s Day, we often hear phrases like “the luck of the Irish” or “finding a pot of gold.” But here at Kemper House, the most meaningful things we see each day aren’t luck at all, they’re connections.
For someone living with memory loss, connection is everything.
While memory changes can affect names, dates, and recent events, the ability to feel comfort, belonging, and joy remains. A familiar voice, a warm smile, music from long ago, or simply sitting beside someone who cares can make a powerful difference. These moments may seem small, but they help residents feel safe, valued, and understood.
That’s why our days are intentionally structured around meaningful interaction. Life enrichment activities, music, sensory experiences, shared meals, and one-on-one visits are not just ways to pass the time; they are how we support emotional well-being. Residents may not always remember the exact activity they participated in, but they remember how they felt: relaxed, happy, and connected.
You might notice your loved one smiling more during a visit, humming a familiar tune, or responding to a gentle touch. Those responses are important. Even when words are harder to find, emotional memory remains strong. Connection helps reduce anxiety, encourages engagement, and provides a sense of comfort and security.
Families sometimes worry, “Do they know who I am?”
While recognition can change, the relationship does not disappear. Your loved one still feels your presence. The reassurance in your voice, holding hands, looking at photos together, or simply sitting quietly side-by-side continues to matter more than you may realize.
At Kemper House, we don’t rely on luck to create good days. Our team works intentionally to build relationships with each resident, learning their preferences, routines, favorite music, and what brings them comfort. Those daily interactions are what truly brighten a resident’s world.
This March, as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we’re reminded that our “pot of gold” isn’t at the end of a rainbow; it’s found in the moments of laughter, shared stories, familiar songs, and meaningful visits we experience together.
Thank you for being part of that connection. Your visits, calls, and continued involvement make a difference every single day. 🍀
