Embracing the Outdoors at Kemper House
When Betty Kemper first envisioned Kemper House, she envisioned a place that cared for the whole person – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. One of the most powerful ways we support that vision is through the use of our outdoor spaces.
Our courtyards and porches were intentionally designed to be safe, secure, and stimulating. These environments offer so much more than just a place to relax, they are part of a therapeutic approach that encourages independence, mobility, and overall well-being.
Spending time outdoors has been shown to reduce agitation and promote memory recall in individuals living with dementia. Residents can enjoy familiar, meaningful activities like gardening, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. These everyday moments connect residents to their past, their loved ones, and to the world around them.
Some of the benefits of outdoor activity include:
• Boosted mood and reduced stress
• Gentle physical exercise and improved mobility
• Opportunities for privacy or social interaction
• Safe sun exposure, which supports vitamin D intake and musculoskeletal health
• A stronger sense of independence and freedom
We’re especially excited to share that we’ve recently added new chicken coops to our courtyards. Animal care and interaction offer therapeutic value and spark joy, and our residents enjoy watching and visiting with the chickens each day.
As the weather warms up, we encourage families to join their loved ones outside for small gatherings, strolls, or simply to share a moment of peace together. Please check with the front desk to coordinate visits or check out our Life Enrichment calendar to learn more about upcoming outdoor activities.
At Kemper House, the outdoors isn’t just an amenity; it’s an extension of our care philosophy, promoting comfort, connection, and a true sense of home. Have a wonderful summer!
